The NAWAMED project and its partners

NAWAMED in brief (more info here: https://www.enicbcmed.eu/projects/nawamed)

  • Objective

To promote the application of innovative, sustainable, low-cost technologies and measures for the use of unconventional water resources for domestic purposes.

  • What will be improved

The project will demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of natural and low-cost technical solutions, such as green walls to treat unconventional water resources in schools, universities, public facilities and in a refugee camp. The reclaimed wastewater or rainwater will be reused for different purposes including toilet wastewater and irrigation and hence the domestic drinking water consumption will be less.

  • Who will benefit

– Owners/managers of the 8 pilot sites

– 450 operators (e.g. engineers, architects, etc.), construction companies, university students

– 50 representatives of local and regional authorities

  • Expected Results

– 8 full-scale pilot installations for greywater/stormwater treatment and reuse, including green walls (vertical vegetated elements mounted on building surfaces) and constructed wetlands to treat flows from public buildings, parking areas and a refugee camp

– 30% reduction of potable water consumption in the pilot sites

– 9,000 m3/year of unconventional water to be reused at urban/domestic level

– 15 technical visits to the pilot sites

– 10 training seminars organized for technical staff and decision makers politicians

– 1 Mediterranean-level policy document to promote the inclusion of water demand management and non-conventional water-related measures in national policy frameworks.

PARTNER:

Lead partner – Province of Latina – Italy

IRIDRA – Italy

SVI.MED. EuroMediterranean Centre for Sustainable Development – Italy

Centre for Water Research and Technologies – Tunisia

University of Jordan – Jordan

Energy and Water Agency – Malta

American University of Beirut – Lebanon

Associated Partners:

Municipality of Tunis – Tunisia

Municipality of Jerash – Jordan

Municipality of Ferla – Italy

Politecnico di Torino – Italy

For Italy:

  • Province of Latina, as lead partner which in the past has already aimed at the treatment and management of water resources in the area thanks to green infrastructures
  • IRIDRA Srl., as a technical partner, internationally recognized as an authoritative voice on the topics covered, whose members are the authors of countless scientific articles on the subject of constructed wetlands and nature-based solutions and who have been dealing with constructed wetlands in Italy since the 1990s. The technical director of IRIDRA (Fabio Masi) has been a member of the Management Committee of the Specialist Group on Wetland Systems for Water Pollution Control of the International Water Association since 1999, the most important international technical-scientific organization in the field of water resources. One of the founding members, Giulio Conte, is the author of an educational book on the theme of water in Italy
  • MED. onlus, as communication managers and local actor who has been active for almost twenty years in Sicily for the transfer of good practices on the sustainable management of resources, including water, which has involved the municipality of Ferla in NAWAMED, recognized in recent years as one of the excellences in Italy among the Virtuous Municipalities etc. (ref. etc.)

For Tunisia:

  • CERTE, Center for Water Research and Technologies: a center of excellence and a public science and technology institute in close collaboration with the national ministerial bodies which operates in synergy with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Tunisia. CERTE has involved the Municipality of Tunis to give maximum visibility to the project activities and to involve it right from the initial stage.

For Jordan:

  • University of Jordan who plays a leading role in developing and implementing national strategies to improve and manage Jordan’s water and energy resources. The project coordinator in Jordan is in particular the head of the main national programs for the fight against climate change and resource management. In Jordan, the Municipality of Jerash was involved, the most popular locality after Petra, to give maximum visibility to the demonstration activity, as well as directly on the university campus, also for “educational” purposes.

For Malta:

  • Energy and Water Agency: the Maltese government agency that works for the formulation and implementation of national policies on the subject of resources, in particular water resources. In the project, in addition to contributing to an exchange of know-how, without having an active role as a “pilot area”, Malta strategically contributes to the dialogue between the two shores of the Mediterranean through the double role of EWA as institutional technical partner in order to influence the transactional policies and in particular to achieve a single Mediterranean vision on the issue of water resource management through the integration of the use of non-conventional resources.

For Lebanon:

American University of Beirut: authority in the field of research and education in Lebanon which allows the project to test the proposed solutions also in “particular” areas, in addition to the university campus itself with clear multiplier effects, such as the refugee camps which, as we know, in Lebanon have coexisted for many years in the area but still suffer from essential problems such as the management of resources and wastewater.
